Nathdwara lies 48 kms north of Udaipur and is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Rajasthan. The name `Nathdwara' means abode of lord. In the 17th century mughal emperor Aurangzeb prohibited idol worship and destroyed many temples sacred to the hindus. Devout hindus in Mathura were fearful that their idols would meet the same fate and decided to move the important ones to safer places. The idol of Shrinathji was thus moved from Mathura to the state of Mewar. The chariot which was carrying the holy image at the very spot of the present temple. Taking it as an indication by the deity to be installed there, a temple was built and the village came to be known as Nathdwara. Nathdwara is also famous for its pichwai paintings. Done on handspun cloth, the pichwai depict scenes from the legends that surround Lord Krishna. Nathdwara is a small, busy town with a large number of visiting devotees throughout the year. Nathdwara abounds in souvenir shops and it is also possible to see the pichwai being painted. One can even pick up good silver items from here
